The Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) in southern Tasmania, manage 6 Volunteer Caretaker Programs at the following sites and locations:

· Cape Bruny Light station
· Bruny Island Quarantine Station
· Mt Field National Park Campground
· Maatsuyker Island
· Cockle Creek
· Melaleuca in the South West National Park

‘Volunteer Caretakers play such an important role both in summer and, in some cases, year round, by providing a welcome face to our visitors locally and from all over the world’, says Pip Gowen (Regional Volunteer Facilitator South).

Typical volunteer tasks include meeting and greeting visitors, providing information and interpretation and ensuring our gateways to our parks, reserves and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) are clean and well presented.

‘Volunteers also assist the PWS by providing extra hands for basic maintenance of grounds and buildings. Every year, volunteers say how much they have enjoyed the opportunity to live in a wonderful spot while meeting lots of interesting people and giving our rangers a helping hand’, Pip added.

Accommodation is provided at most sites for the duration of the placement and PWS provide support throughout, including a full induction and safety briefing, volunteer uniforms and personal protective equipment.
