Wildcare Friends of Pitt Water Orielton Lagoon

Where we work

We volunteer, in partnership with the Parks and Wildlife Service, at Pitt Water and Orielton Lagoon, near Sorell. Pitt Water-Orielton Lagoon is a Ramsar listed wetland and Nature Reserve. It provides habitat for migratory and resident birds, is an important estuarine ecosystem and is an essential nursery for marine life. The reserve provides habitat for a number of threatened birds, animals and plants, including some unusual and unique species. The Ramsar site is one of ten Ramsar sites (wetlands of international importance) in Tasmania. It is an extensive and diverse wetland and is the only Ramsar site in Tasmania located in an urban area.

What we do

The focus of the group will be on the Pitt Water Orielton Ramsar site and being involved in projects to enhance the bird habitat values of the area. Activities may include re vegetation, weeding, rubbish removal and bird surveys water quality monitoring and community events. Some of our work occurs in saltmarshes and some on cliff tops, while at other times we are able to access places not normally open to the public such as islands within the reserve. Due to the bird life in the area most of our work occurs during winter.
