Get Outside with Community (South)

Where we work

Get Outside runs events all over southern Tasmania.

What we do

Get Outside is based on a simple concept. We facilitate nature – based experiences for refugees and new migrants to Tasmania, to connect to place and to each other. Get Outside has been operating for seven years, taking well over 1,000 refugees and migrants on bush walks, outdoor events and camps: and training over 50 young people to become Get Outside leaders. Get Outside is a branch of Wildcare Inc. We are a community group and our effectiveness is enhanced through our collaborative partnerships with Tas Parks and Wildlife Service (TPWS), Hobart City Council Bush Adventures, the Migrant Resource Centre, Red Cross, Catholic Care and Tas TAFE Young Migrant English Program. We also work with indigenous educators, arts workers and local volunteers. These networks bring a unique skill set and focus, providing a greater depth when exploring Tasmania’s wild places, and a richness of story. Our pool of confident and knowledgeable leaders have a range of languages and backgrounds. Our leaders run walks and activities to facilitate authentic and approachable excursions. Their input into culturally specific planning ensures the walks are accessible and enjoyable. The model is completely flexible. We can take a small group of mothers and babies on a pram walk through to running big multi-cultural event, a challenging mountain climb for youth, or a three-night camp.

These are our Goals

  • To facilitate regular walks, event and excursion for refugees and new migrants, providing access to Tasmania’s beautiful environment for diverse participants and focussing on those most vulnerable to social isolation.
  • To train and support leaders so that they have the confidence to plan and lead walks within their families and broader communities, whilst building knowledge and connection to place.
  • To improve health, particular mental health and well being through nature based experiences and strengthened connections within community.
  • To establish new and ongoing partnerships and funding models that strengthen our sustainability.
