Friends of Low Head Penguin Colony

Who we are

Following a number of significant and high profile dog attacks with the Low Head Rookery, a forum was convened by Senator Whish-Wilson and the Low Head Progress and Heritage Association for the purpose of finding solutions for permanently protecting little penguins at Low Head. The meeting was attended by over 40 people and from here, a working group was established which lead to the creation of the Wildcare Friends of Low Head Penguin Colony. We work in conjunction with the Parks & Wildlife Service, Wildcare Tas, Birdlife Tasmania, George Town Council, Tamar NRM, GT Coastal Community Management Group, private landholders and the University of Tasmania.

Where we work

We work in the area of the Low Head Penguin Rookery on land of mixed tenure - partly Crown Land, Local Government and Private.  The Crown Land comprises Conservation Area and Historic Site and our work on Private land is carried out with the agreement of the relevant landholder. The Parks and Wildlife Service works with the Branch to achieve mutually agreed outcomes and to support and sustain this colony.

What we do

The objects of the Wildcare Branch ‘Friends of Low Head Penguins Colony’ are: • Protection of the Little Penguins and Conservation of the Species • Establishment of long-term population monitoring and adaptive management procedures for the Low Head Little Penguin colony • Education of the Community • Awareness of environmental issues Further details can be found in the FoLHPC Strategic plan and the BirdLife Tasmania Report The FoLHPC Strategic Plan is consistent with the NRET's Little Penguin Survey and Monitoring Toolkit, available online at NRET We meet regular at Low Head.
