Black Gum Conservation Group

What is black gum?

Eucalyptus ovata forest and woodland is a threatened vegetation community, restricted to lutruwita/Tasmania. Eucalyptus ovata (black gum) constitutes important feeding habitat during the breeding season for the critically endangered swift parrot. The endangered forty-spotted pardalote depends on E. ovata forest and woodland for habitat where E. viminalis occurs as a subdominant, particularly on islands off mainland lutruwita/Tasmania. Many other species are known to use E. ovata tree hollows as nesting habitat, including the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot.

Who is Black Gum Conservation Group?

Black Gum Conservation Group (BGCG) is a community of passionate and enthusiastic volunteers, who collaborate with private and public landholders, conservation specialists and other landcare organisations to enhance the area of E. ovata forest and woodland in lutruwita/Tasmania. We achieve this by protecting current, and establishing new areas of E. ovata, largely through on-the-ground revegetation projects on public and private land. Based in Launceston, BGCG operates wherever E. ovata naturally occurs including on lutruwita/Tasmania’s offshore islands.

How can I get involved?

Our valuable volunteers can get involved with fundraising, weeding, tree planting, and ongoing monitoring. Become a member of Wildcare Tasmania and join the BGCG branch to keep up to date with current projects and future volunteering opportunities. If you have more questions, want to get involved behind the scenes, or you're interested in a revegetation project on your land, you can reach us at blackgumconservationgroup@yahoo.com
