Cradle Mountain Spring bees and other events

Wildcare Cradle Mountain Volunteers will be assisting Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service Staff at Cradle Mountain National Park to undertake a range of spring bee tasks across the park in November. This is your chance to be part of a fabulous group of volunteers that are committed to the protection and sustainable use of the park and have fun while we walk, work, sand, paint, plant, and count.

Details of the multi-day and single day Cradle Mountain Spring Bees 2026 events are included below.

Closing date: 2pm Wednesday 30 September 2026 (selection sent to you by 4 October or earlier)

Volunteers will be selected on skills, experience, interest and on available accommodation. Places are limited so if selected and you withdraw we will need sufficient notice to select a replacement. If not filled the places will be opened for registrations.

Spring Bee 1

Saturday 7 – Sunday 8 November 2026

Activities (examples, activities may vary)

Track maintenance (e.g. Dove Lake, Dove Canyon, Crater Lake)

Sanding and oiling tables/benches.

Weather dependent – inside jobs will be organised where possible, this could include scanning photo slides, wildlife recording app training, dusting and cleaning heritage displays.

Preference is given to volunteers who can attend the entire event.

Accommodation - Shared volunteer accommodation is available at Cradle Mountain from 6-9 November. A shuttle bus ticket can be provided for your stay if you wish to walk before or after.

Spring Bee 2

Thursday 19 – Sunday 22 November 2026

Activities (examples, activities may vary)

Track maintenance and pruning (e.g. Rainforest Walk, Enchanted Walk, Pencil Pine, Maryland Track)

Mt Kate House maintenance

Sanding and oiling tables/benches.

Planting native species around the visitor centre (see below additional one day volunteer option)

Optional 2 night overnight trip to Scott Kilvert Hut for track and hut maintenance

Weather dependent – inside jobs will be organised where possible, this could include scanning photo slides, wildlife recording app training, dusting and cleaning heritage displays.

Preference is given to volunteers who can attend the entire event.

Shared volunteer accommodation is available at Cradle Mountain from 18-23 November. A shuttle bus ticket can be provided for your stay if you wish to walk before or after.

Tree Planting Day

21 Saturday November 2026 – 9am - 1pm

Wildcare Cradle Mountain Volunteers received a grant from Cradle Coast NRM to propagate and plant additional native species around the visitor centre. Volunteers who are able to attend for the day can come along and assist with planting and setting up tree guards.

This is your chance to contribute to the long-term enhancement of the visitor centre area and bringing some more natural vegetation into the space. Please register for this option at the link to the form at the top.

10 Years of Wombat Surveys at Cradle Mountain

Saturday 21 November 2026

2:00 – 4:30pm

Cradle Mountain Interpretation Centre Gallery

An event to celebrate and reflect on 10 years of Wombat surveys at Cradle Mountain and all the efforts that volunteers and PWS have contributed. This in-person event or online webinar will feature presentations on the Wombat survey data, searching for Pandani Moths and to discuss future monitoring priorities for volunteers to assist with.

Further details and invitations will be sent to WCMV, other groups and interested organisations for this event, however you can also register for this option only (online or in person) at the link at the top.

Note: the presentations are intended to be recorded for later viewing.

Friends of the Pandani Moth surveys

In addition to these events Friends of the Pandani Moth will be surveying for these enigmatic moths from 19 - 25 November 2026. Accommodation is provided at Waldheim Cabins - preference is for people committing to whole trip but can be flexible.

FotPM volunteers will be able to join in the Saturday 21 November planting and Wombat surveying celebration and along with enjoying their own time on the mountain walking tracks.

Getting to see the night time side of Cradle and contribute to valuable wildlife monitoring is an exciting opportunity for volunteers.
