The Bruny Island Quarantine Station holds a unique place in Tasmania’s history. It consists of 128 hectares of native bushland plus buildings and ruins from all eras of its fascinating history. The Quarantine Station Volunteer Caretaker Program on Bruny Island provides opportunities for volunteers to enjoy living on a peninsula extending into Barnes Bay in a heritage listed cottage originally built for the Medical Superintendent in 1884.
Volunteer Caretakers provide a physical presence at the Quarantine Station, open the Station for visitors from Thursday to Monday to provide visitor information about the natural history of the area and the heritage self- guided walk, carry out minor maintenance and assist with coordination of other Parks and Wildlife Services (PWS) and Friends of Bruny Island Quarantine Station (FOBIQS) activities at the site. A stint at the Quarantine Station could serve as an ‘apprenticeship’ for those people seeking volunteer positions at more challenging PWS locations such as Melaleuca, Deal Island or Maatsuyker Island.
Volunteer accommodation is in a one bedroom 1884 cottage, but with a large bedroom and lounge it sleeps 4 comfortably. A well appointed kitchen, wood fire, an oil heater and 2 small fan heaters, keep the cottage cosy all year round. A small vege patch, oysters on the rocks and an onsite pontoon for fishing all add to the experience.
