Spend Easter on King Island with us, searching for the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot (OBP) during their northern migration from Melaleuca in SW Tasmania to the mainland.
Volunteers will work in teams of two to four, visiting different areas of the island in a systematic search that will take them to accessible coastal areas of the island.
Some members of Friends of the OBP will be taking part in the survey with subsidised airfares, accommodation and vehicle hire thanks to a grant from the Tasmanian Nature Conservation Fund. They were selected through an open Expression of Interest process that took place in November 2024.
Any members of Wildcare* are welcome to join the survey for any or all of the survey days (Saturday 19 to Thursday 24 April) but will need to make and pay for their own travel arrangements. Friends of the OBP may be able to assist in some way with accommodation or transport on the island for a limited number of volunteers. If you are interested in self-funding your trip to take part in the survey, please email friends.of.the.obp@gmail.com to find out what assistance is available.
During January, the following OBP surveys will be open for registration:
15-16 March - Strahan
22-23 March - Strahan
5-6 April - Arthur River & Woolnorth windfarms
12-13 April - Arthur River & Woolnorth windfarms
