Do you enjoy getting out in the bush?

Would you like to do something positive to help save a critically-endangered species?

If the answer is yes, we would love to have you join us for the OBP survey.

Teams of two or more will visit different areas around Strahan over the weekend of 4-5 March to look for Orange-bellied Parrots. Note that the survey locations on the Sunday will be north of Strahan, at Trial Harbour or Granville Harbour.

Volunteers will need to travel to Strahan on Friday 3 March, to arrive by 7pm to check in with the survey leaders as the surveys will start at about 8am on Saturday morning. The finishing time on the Sunday afternoon will be flexible to fit in with volunteers’ travel needs.

We will run an induction session about the surveys with time at the end to go through how to identify OBPs for those who are unfamiliar with the bird.  The induction session will be held through an online Zoom meeting on Tuesday 28 February.  Zoom is easy to use so don’t worry if you haven’t used it before – we will help you with getting started.

Accommodation has been organised with the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) in the local PWS Office or volunteers may choose to make their own arrangements.

A detailed information sheet will be sent to people who register for the event.  If you have any questions before you register, please email

Registrations close on Friday 17 February.  Note that you need to be a member of Wildcare to register and to be registered as a volunteer with Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania to take part in the survey.

Note that there will be five other OBP surveys during 2023:

  • 25-26 March at Arthur River and Woolnorth
  • 20-21 May at Arthur River and Woolnorth
  • 22-23 July at Strahan and Trial Harbour or Granville Harbour
  • 19-20 August at Strahan and Trial Harbour or Granville Harbour

These dates are firm and will be added to the Event Calendar eight weeks before they are due to start.
