Threatened Plants Tasmania (Wildcare Inc.)
Field Trip to Milford
Date: Wednesday 25th September, 2019

Trip overview: Volunteers are invited to register for this trip, which is to conduct the annual census of Caladenia saggicola (sagg spider-orchid) at Milford, near the Hobart airport.

Numbers will be limited to 8 volunteers.

Please read this information and register by Sunday 22rd September either below, by using the TPT web site, or if this is not possible, contacting the Field Trip Coordinator, Doug Clarke
Email douglasclarke@bigpond.com Phone 0419365066 (Please leave a message if no answer).

Data Manager: Oberon Carter will be the data manager for this trip. If you have a GPS, please bring it along. Please ensure your GPS is set to the Australian datum GDA94 and co-ordinates are in eastings and northings.

Meeting Time: 09:30 am. Estimated finish time: 2:00pm approx.

Place: On the left of Pittwater Rd, a few yards from the intersection with the
Tasman Highway. (This is the turn-off to Seven-Mile Beach, just east of the
Hobart airport roundabout.)

Threatened species: For this trip we will be working with Oberon Carter (Senior Conservation
Management Officer at DPIPWE) to re-map the distribution of the Critically Endangered sagg spiderorchid.

Site and Work Conditions Summary: The site supports white gum woodland on deep sands and is quite flat. However, the ground is uneven with lots of holes (rabbits), and tripping hazards. These are often obscured by thick understorey vegetation, and there is quite a lot of fallen timber, so gaiters, long pants and long sleeves are recommended. You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness. For surveying the area, walking while observing the ground will be required. The area may have a lot of mosquitoes, and other insects, reptiles and animals are present. Mobile phone reception is available.

Food:
Bring lunch and snacks for morning and afternoon tea and 1-2 liters of drinking water.

NOTE: Given that we work in areas with threatened species we need to be especially careful not to
introduce seeds or pathogens, such as Phytophthora cinnamomi, into the areas we visit.
Before going on any TPT field trip, please make sure that:

  • There are no seeds caught in your footwear or clothes (esp. shoe tread, laces, Velcro, the sides of tongues, cuffs, socks and inside pockets).
  • Ensure there is no mud or soil on the soles of your shoes.

Please see the TPT Guidelines for Seed-free and Phytophthora-free Footwear and Clothing at
http://www.tpt.org.au/ftg.php for more detail. This contains essential information on preparing your gear for TPT outings.
